WAITANGI DAY / NEW ZEALAND DAY

Waitangi Day is New Zealand Day. It is celebrated on February 6th and commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on February 6th, 1840. The Treaty was signed between the British government and Maori tribal leaders and it made New Zealand a part of the British Empire. In turn the Maori people were granted British citizenship and land rights. For many people the Treaty marks the foundation of New Zealand as a nation.
